1856 FIRST EDITION MONOGRAPH ON FEMALE STERILITY ILLUSTRATED WITH COLOR PLATES BY NOTED PHILADELPHIA LITHOGRAPHER.

9 1/4 inches tall hardcover, original brown cloth boards, blindstamped design, bright gilt title to cover, viii, 170 pages. Spine dulled, spine ends lightly worn, only marks are handstamp of Cincinnati Academy of Medicine Library to title page and dedication page, which reads, "NOT TO THE INVENTOR OF THE CLAMP SUTURE, THE CROWNING SURGICAL APPLIANCE OF THE AGE; NOR TO THE PHILANTHROPIC PROJECTOR OF THE WOMAN'S HOSPITAL, THE NOBLEST CHARITY OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, BUT TO THE MAN OF PRIVATE WORTH, TO J. MARION SIMS, M.D., THIS VOLUME IS DEDICATED, AS A TOKEN OF THE PERSONAL FRIENDSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL ESTEEM OF THE AUTHOR." Five color lithograph plates by T. Sinclair with tissue guards and 49 wood engravings. Overall very good.

AUGUSTUS KINSLEY GARDNER (1821-1876) earned his M.D. from Harvard in 1844 with a thesis on syphilis. After a year in Europe, he settled in New York, where City Dispensary, Lying-In Asylum District, and Bloomingdale Hospital. He was the first in New York to provide chloroform in labor. THOMAS SINCLAIR (1807-1881) was one of the premier Philadelphia lithographers of the 19th-century, particularly in the field of chromolithography. Trained in lithography in Edinburgh, Sinclair immigrated to the United States ca. 1830. A practical lithographer throughout his career, Sinclair produced all genres of lithographs including maps, advertisements, city and landscape views, sheet music covers, portraiture, political cartoons, certificates, and book illustrations. In addition to chromolithography, Sinclair became particularly well-regarded for his illustrative work and received several commissions for illustrations for government, scientific and medical publications throughout the mid 19th century.
