About This Item
The Macmillan Company, 1902. Hardcover. Near Fine. Binding by C-box-X with their monogram to front cover, reprint, 38th thousand. Hardcover, full green cloth with white, black, and gilt illustration to front cover, gilt illustra-tion and lettering to spine, top edge gilt, 7-3/4" tall, 421 pages + publisher's ads. Spine slightly darkened, thumb-print to front endpaper. Despite the story being billed as one of "Modern Rome," Crawford was one of the earliest of modern novelists to include fantasy elements in his stories; in this case, our heroine in modern Rome was a Vestal Virgin in ancient Rome. The binding designer clearly felt a neoclassical ap-proach would be appropriate for the story and has depict-ed the altar of the sacred fire at Vesta.
