Animadversiones In Charitonis Aphrodisiensis De Chaerea & Callirrhoe Narrationum Anatoriarum Libros VIII]. 4to. pp. 1 p.l., xx, 144, 168; 6 p.l., 788, [56]index, [2]errata. half-title in Vol. II. engraved & woodcut title devices. woodcut ornaments & initials. contemporary vellum (splits along joints & edges, spine chipped, lacking front free-endpaper, some foxing & browning throughout). Edition Princeps of this historical Greek romance, set during the period of the Peloponnesian War. The author, who identifies himself at the beginning of his work as a native of Aphrodisias in Caria and secretary to the orator Athenagoras, is believed to have flourished about the end of the fourth century. The original Greek text is followed by a Latin translation by J.J.Reiske, and copious notes by J.P.D’Orville (Volume II, with separate title), which Clarke commends as containing "a treasure of critical learning".
