Pierre-Jean de Béranger (1780-1857) was a prolific and popular French poet and songwriter (chansonnier). He has been described as 'the most popular French songwriter of all time'. His songs are elaborate, meticulously composed, and notable for their clarity, wit and incisiveness. The socialist and revolutionary content of his songs resulted in several brushes with the authorities, resulting in two periods of imprisonment before songs such as 'Le Vieux Drapeau' helped bring about the revolution of 1830. Although Béranger played a part, with his friends Lafitte and Lafayette, in placing Louis Philippe I upon the throne, he refused all the appointments proffered by the king and his ministers; preferring to live a simple life as a philosopher, content with the income from the sale of his songs, and preserving his personal independence. He did, however, ask for a pension for his friend, Rouget de Lisle, author of the Marseillaise, who was now old and poor, and had been dependent on him for five years. Heavy Set. U.K. postage at default charge but overseas buyers will be asked for extra; enquiries welcome. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured.
