About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. Rare first edition, first state with six-line colophon with matching original wrapper without isbn number at back. Charming, original illustration throughout this first edition by Joseph Schindelman. Includes the infamous Oompa-Loompa illustrations (excised in later editions). Set into volume is First Day Cover beautifully signed by Roald Dahl for the "The Year of the Child" in 1979: "Roald Dahl." First Day of Issue envelope features four charmingly illustrated postal stamps with silver silhouettes of the Queen and color designs of: "The Tale of Peter Rabbit; The Wind in the Willows; Winnie-the-Pooh; and, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Also, what appears as a child's color drawing with row of little ones waving in wheeled carts. Very attractive. Pictorial white cloth boards feature the original jacket design at front, spine, and back cover. Boards with moderate discoloration, some corner, edge wear, bump. Small black emblem at back board: "Gibralter Library Bind." Retains the original chocolate colored top-stain and mustard endpapers. Pages near very good; no writing, stamps, or indications of actual library use. Light discoloration to text block. Bind good, square; hinges intact. Dust wrapper, moderate edge wear, chip, discoloration; unclipped 3.95, protected in new clear sleeve. Scarce good true first edition in same original wrapper with signed First Day Issue envelope with classic stamps. Concerning the adventures of four nasty children and Our Hero with Mr. Willy Wonka and his famous candy plant. Darkly humorous, slightly creepy, and ultimately the tale of a nice guy who just might finish first, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is one of the prolific Roald Dahl's most popular works. Life changes for a poor but kindhearted boy named Charlie Bucket when he manages to win one of five golden tickets that allows him and a guest of his choice to tour the chocolate factory of an eccentric and reclusive candy inventor named Willy Wonka. On the big day, Charlie and the other visitors are warned to obey all of Mr. Wonka's strict, but rather strange, rules for behavior. What will happen if they disobey? And why has Mr. Wonka allowed them to tour his factory in the first place? Introduces readers to such unforgettable characters as the hardworking Oompa-Loompas, the extremely spoiled Veruca Salt, and, as readers will soon discover, the aptly named Violet Beauregarde. 162 pages. Insured post.. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. Illus. by Schindelman, Joseph (Illustration). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
