About This Item
Paperback. Very Good. Paperback. SCARCE. An interesting collection of Civil War anecdotes, written during the war. Cummings served in the 28th Michigan Infantry. "He was in battle and spent time in the notorious Andersonville Prison, where he helped amputate the feet of another soldier with gangrene. It wasn't until later in civilian life that Cummings lost his own feet. All that and more is told in this raucous account of war. Included is another unique account, that of George E. Reed, who wrote about his time with the Sixth Army Corps in the summer of 1863. His account was written while he was in the ranks and it is written entirely in verse. It may be the only such account from that war." (B&N book review).
