About This Item

Itō Wako 伊藤倭子.[Cherries on a black ground]. Sheet size 22.5 x 32cm and image size 9 x 18cm. Mezzotint print of cherries on a black ground marked "èp. d'artiste" and signed in pencil.

Itō Wako 伊藤倭子 (b. 1945) was born in Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, the Northern island of Japan. In 1967, while still in his early 20's, he won an award in the annual Zendō exhibition 全道展 in Sapporo. A printmaker known for his mezzotints of fruits and flowers, he went on to participate in shows in the US, Australia, Japan and across Europe. Mezzotint is such a demanding medium that few have mastered it. It lends great gravitas to these simple images.
