Book #1 (of what would become a series of 27 books) in the popular girls' series that introduced the world to nurse Cherry Ames (CA) & inspired young girls from the 1940s-1960s to pursue a career in nursing. Orig. published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1944, this is the First British Edition (later printing, listing to CA#16 in front) from 1956, retaining the original DJ, but with a slightly different look to the book than the American version. 185 pp. Hardcover 8vo has bright red textured cloth over boards stamped with an image of Cherry to front board & lettered in black to spine. Condition is VG: very clean, binding strong & straight, pages slightly off-white with tanning, heavier to edges, & foxing to all endpapers & front matter. Former owner's name in neat pen to half title page; else unmarked. the bottom-clipped DJ is VG- (minus): bright & colorful, but with pen scribbling on front cover, small chips, & rubbing to extremities; listing to CA#16 on front flap & back cover, ad for CA Girls Annual on rear flap.
