New York: Random House, 1973. 197pp. Blue cloth spine, red boards, gilt titles on spine, McCarthy's initials blindstamped on front board. Binding tight, spine straight, corners square. Slight bump to lower edge of each board, more pronounced to back board but not serious damage in either case. Slight foxing along top edge of pages, but no foxing within book. Dust jacket shows mild edgewear and slight toning to jacket flaps. Title lettering on jacket spine faded - common in this edition but worth noting. Dust jacket is price clipped. Two very small spots at top edge of back jacket panel. Stated first edition of McCarthy's third novel. Additional pictures available on request. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good+. 8vo.
Synopsis
Child of God is the third novel by American author Cormac McCarthy. Though the novel received critical praise, it was not a financial success. Like its predecessor, Outer Dark, Child of God established McCarthy's interest in using extreme isolation, perversity, and violence to represent normal human experience. Set in Sevier County, Tennessee, in the 1960s, Child of God tells the story of Lester Ballard, an outcast from society. Released from jail after being falsely accused of rape, Ballard haunts the countryside, falling into deeper and deeper crime and perversion. Considered McCarthy's darkest work.
