Susan Atkins was one of several young women influenced by Charles Manson to participate in robbery and murder in the San Francisco area in 1969. Convicted of murder in the first degree, she spent the next 40 years in prison, escaping the gas chamber due to California's dropping the death penalty. She died Sept. 24, 2009, after having one leg emputated and being diagnosed with brain cancer. 223 pp..
