About This Item

Paris, 1931, small 4to, pp. 236 (3); orig. cloth; as published in card slipcase, printed label to one side. Book designed by Monroe Wheeler and printed in Paris in the Didot types by Ducros and Colas; the illustrations done in collotype by Jacomet. One of 660 numbered copies on Montgolfier vellum, after 35 on Maillol and 5 on japan vellum. - A quite good copy; light wear (fading) at head and foot of spine, a faint splash mark at top edge of rear board; tissue guards to illustrations all present. Some normal shelf-wear at the slipcase, without any real damage; printed label browned. - This copy became William S. Cockrell's, when it was given and inscribed to him in June 1963, by the writer Glenway Wescott, who was Wheeler's close friend, lover, and long time companion, and brother-in-law to Barbara Harrison. An impressive book production - Wescott's idea - from this expatriate, Parisian press, of Byron's long narrative poem, containing over twenty painterly illustrations by Sir Francis Cyril Rose (1909-1979; 4th baronet of the Montreal Roses). He was an English painter vigorously championed by Gertrude Stein. Between 1929 and 1936 he resided in Paris where he was trained by Francis Picabia and José Maria Sert. He also worked as a set painter for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. - [Heavy book: extra shipping cost for destinations out with France]
