Boston: Fields, Osgood, 1871. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hammatt Billings. pp: [iv][4]5-15. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Full brown leather boards with blind stamp trim and decoration, marbled endpapers, and eleven illustrations by Hammatt Billings. Dickens told one of his biographers that as a child he used to wander at night about a churchyard near their home. And, this memory was the inspiration for his story. This is a very good copy with rubbing to the boards, a small bookplate on the front paste down. All but two of the illustrations have the original tissue guards.
