About This Item

Ames.: Iowa State University Press.. 1977.. Map, xix + 274pp, occasional light browning otherwise good copy in browned dustjacket. Autobiographical account by the former head of the American consulate in Dairen, called at the time "the only American post in Communist China". Although the Chinese were involved in Dairen's civil administration, the Soviet army was firmly in Charge. Paddock was forced to deal with Russian military and secret police, Chinese Communist officials, and the Chinese police before acting on the most routine matters. This book is Paddock's personal story of life on the front lines of the Cold War: "sometimes scary, sometimes amusing, always frustrating and forever fascinating.". .
