The Kid (or, The Girl) is the 2nd novel written in 1907 by the Mexican writer Carlos González Peña (1885 - 1955). Set in early 20th century, poverty stricken neighborhood of Mexico City. Protagonist Antoñita Fernández, is a seamstress laboring long hours to sustain the family after her father's untimely death. Her aged mother, has withdrawn into religion; older brother Alberto pursues but night life; younger teenage sister Lena despises work; then, and there is Estéfana, the spinster that's been in the family forever. Chronicle of Antoñita's deterioration over a year, complicated by her falling in love but to have her lover seduce sister Lena ... Antoñita falls ill, Estéfana rallies and? Through the voice of a poet Urízar, the author wonders if life, like a young girl, is but composed of eternal smiles be essentially superficial? Powerful tale. 349 + xi pages, and Indice.
