Philadelphia: Printed and sold by Joseph Crukshank, in Market near Third-Street., MDCCXC. [1790]. 18mo (5.125" x 3.125"), original full calf. xii, 166, [2] p., numerous wood engravings. Bookplate of Erastus Corning and old catalog description affixed to front paste-down.

The scarce first American edition of this juvenile emblem book first published in England in 1772. Erastus Corning (1794-1872) was a four-time Mayor of Albany and served as President of the New York Central Railroad.



Evans 22854; Welch 1457.1. Rosenbach cites only the 1815 Hartford edition. Only one copy recorded in American Book Prices Current from 1975 to present.



CONDITION: Good, 1.25" split along lower edge of front hinge, lacking front endpapers, twentieth century bookplate on verso of title-page, brownign at edges of title page, some foxing and browning throughout as expected.
