First Edition of this essay that had lain dormant among Mrs. Stevenson's papers; after her death, her son Lloyd Osbourne had it published (4,000 copies), with his own preface -- uniform with THE WAIF WOMAN. In this copy, page 7 is paginated; in some it is not. This is a fine copy; the scarce dust jacket is in very good condition (with minor soil but with very little wear -- it is usually not even present). Beinecke 702; Princeton 88.

Quarter lavender-coloured cloth over beige boards, lavender lettering on front cover (slight bumping to 1 corner), w/ d.j. lettering printed in lavender (dustsoiling, 1 minor closed tear), NF/VG copy. First edition in book form, of this posthumously published essay that the author had first composed in Saranac in the winter of 1887-1888, but according to his stepson appeared to have likely decided it was more likely to depress rather than encourage the prospective artist, or author.
