About This Item
Dorchester, MA: Walter Baker & Co., Ltd., 1904. Small but lavish promotional cook book issued by Walter Baker & Co. 64 pp. plus 6 full page chromolithographs of the company's products (chocolate and cocoa products). Publisher's pictorial wrappers; the front with the title surrounded by an embossed leafy border and the rear with a chromolithograph and 2 gilt facsimiles of the gold medals won at Paris in 1900. A very attractive and clean copy. The Walter Baker Co. was the direct descendant of the oldest chocolate producer in the United States, with its origins in 1790. Eventually it was bought out in 1927 by General Foods. Maria Parloa (September 25, 1843 – August 21, 1909) was an American author of books on cooking and housekeeping, the founder of two cooking schools, a noted lecturer on food topics, and an important early figure in the "domestic science" (later "home economics") movement. A culinary pioneer, she was arguably America's first celebrity cook.
