ADOLPH SAPHIR was born in Hungary in a well-respected Jewish family, son of Israel Saphir, a prominent figure in the Jewish community there. As a direct result of the Scottish mission to the Jews, and many conversations with Dr. Keith, the whole family accepted the gospel, believed that Jesus is the promised Messiah, and all were baptised in 1843. That same year Adolph was sent to Edinburgh, to Dr Duncan, together with Alfred Edersheim and Alexander Tomory. From 1844-1848 he attended the gymnasium in Berlin, and then came back to Scotland to study for the ministry in Glasgow University and Marischal College, Aberdeen. Saphir then became a student of theology in the Free Church College, Edinburgh. He was licensed and ordained by the Presbytery of Belfast, and married Sara Owen. He went to St Mark's Presbyterian Church, Greenwich in 1861, and people flocked to hear him, not only on Sundays, but at weeknight services. Adolph Saphir had a great influence on people over the years from many different denominations. He published this book in April 1873 when in the ministry at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Notting Hill. This title was described as 'a great book in the theological sense , and contains a treasure of genuine divinity, such as thinkers of the Puritan age would have hailed with delight' The Literary World. '...Saphir, the Biblical student, the lover of the Word, the lover of the God of Israel...' C.H. Spurgeon in 1891. 8vo. **Will be well-packed for posting/shipping** [ Rosley Books for Antiquarian books, CHS, Cumberland, Everyman, GKC, Inklings, Keswick, Literature, MacDonald, Rarities, Theology and History. ].
