About This Item
London: Printed for T. Waller, 1760. 96pp. Contemporary straight-grain black morocco, tooled and lettered in gilt, A.E.G. Rubbed, old paper label label to head of spine. Marbled endpapers, later bookplate of Mary Flower to FEP, with her inked ownership inscription to foot of title page, scattered foxing. The second issue of an anonymous devotional guide, first published in 1754, in clear imitation of bookseller Robert Dodsley's (1704-1764) immensely popular The Oeconomy of human life, translated from an Indian Manuscript, written by an ancient bramin (1750), though in this instant with pretended connections to the Patmos and the disciple John. The Monthly Review (Vol. XI, 1754) found the book wanting, stating that it 'affords little either for the improvement or entertainment of a rational mind. All editions and issues are remarkably scarce, with this second being no exception; ESTC records a single copy in the British Isles (BL), and one further in North America (LoC). ESTC T77565.. 8vo.

Antiquates Ltd
Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.
Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.
We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.
We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
