Wear to extremities (chiefly edges and corners); slight stains, rubbing and scratches to covers; ex-library markings (chiefly to front endpapers, with printed paper label on front attached endpaper); slight internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to edges and preliminaries). 398 pages. Spine title: Dick's Christian Philosopher. Interesting attempt at reconciliation of the natural sciences (with emphasis on astronomy, or rather cosmology) with religion by the noted scientific popular writer; perhaps his best known work (originally published in Great Britain in 1823; in 8 editions through 1842). Includes the preface to the second UK edition (dated 1824), plus an appendix (containing bibliographical references and notes). See BMC, volume 7, page 259, columns 228-29. Dick (1774-1857), Scottish scientific author; entered Edinburgh University in 1794, and taught in secession schools at Methven and Perth; obtained an LL. D. degree in New York; member of the Royal Astronomical Society (1853); also known for his 1840 work 'The Sidereal Heavens'.Over 10 Engraved Illustrations (including frontispiece).
