About This Item

1749 CICERO Marianus Rome Political Philosophy Rhetoric Balthasar Provenance

"A room without books is like a body without a soul."

― Marcus Tullius Cicero

Cicero was one of the most important Ancient Roman philosophers, known for his orations and political views, many of which shaped the development of thought in the Western world. His writings and speeches have had a lasting influence that is far greater than nearly any other individual, most notably his orations.

This mid-18th-century printing was edited and collected by Basil Balthasar, a Swiss professor of rhetoric. He worked for the Monastery of St. Gallen where he collected prayers and formed his teachings based on the classical techniques established by Cicero.
