London: Hogarth Press 1959. 8vo.Illustrated. First Edition, first issue. 281 pp. Original hardback in pictorial jacket, not price clipped. Jacket bright and pleasing, with minor wear to the spine ends and corners. One spot to front board and minimal fading to edges. Binding firm. Ink inscription to ffep. Very minor spots to prelims but otherwise internally fresh and bright. With black & white drawings by John Ward throughout. Includes the line about the 'a fire at the piano-works almost every year', later removed due to its libellous nature. First volume of Lee's autobiographical trilogy, covering his childhood in the village of Slad, Gloucestershire. . Very Good. Cloth. First Edition, First Issue. 1959.
Synopsis
Laurie Lee was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 1914, and was educated at Slad village school and Stroud Central School. In his teens Lee had already began to write poems. He had met two sisters who encouraged him in his writing aspirations. At the age of nineteen he walked to London and then travelled on foot through Spain, where he was trapped by the outbreak of the Civil War. He later returned by crossing the Pyrenees, as described in his book As I Walked Out one Midsummer Morning . During World War II he made documentary films for the General Post Office film unit (1939-40), and the Crown Film Unit (1941-43). From 1944 to 1946 he worked as an editor at the Ministry of Information Publications. In 1950 he married Catherine Polge and they had one daughter. He died in May 1997.

Prices are in sterling, and are subject to availability. We can accept bank transfers in Sterling, Euros, US and AUS dollars. We ship priority shipping as standard, and pack our books well. Courier services available. We are also able to offer same day delivery within London postcodes for some orders - ask for a quote. Valuable items will be sent via registered airmail or one of the courier services. Large orders can be sent via consolidation, which reduces the cost per book. In the unlikely event of an incorrect description, a full refund will be provided, but please e-mail/telephone first, and within seven days of receipt of the book. We are happy to comply to the EU's rules on distance selling. All books are published in London and 8vo unless stated, and remain my property until paid for in full.
