A handsome first UK edition/first printing in unread Very Fine condition in Very Fine dust-jacket. Signed by author James Lee Burke directly on the title page; Set in 1885 in the American West, Burke's richly evocative novel tells the story of Addie Bundren, the youngest daughter of a family of 10 children. At the age of 18, Addie is married to 19-year-old Floyd, heir to a plantation. Addie quickly discovers that life on the plantation is not what she expected, and she is constantly frustrated by Floyd's lack of ambition and his unwillingness to take on any responsibility. One day, Addie witnesses a massacre of a wagon train by Apache warriors, and she is forced to make a decision: stay and be raped, or try to escape. Ultimately, Addie finds her way to a town on the Mexican border, where she adopts the name Cimarron Rose. She eventually returns to the United States, where she becomes a famous author and crusader for social justice. Burke's novel is a beautifully written and compelling story of one woman's journey from innocence to experience, and her fight; 8vo; Signed by Author .
