Two volumes, large thick octavo, Publisher's original terra-cotta cloth, front panels stamped in blind and gold, spine panels lettered and decorated in gold, rear panels stamped in blind, dark green coated endpapers. Pp [i-v], vi-cxxviii; [1], 2-501; [502-504]; [i-v], vi-xv, [blank], [1], 2-579, [580]. Frontispieces [that of Vol 2 being a colour lithograph with tissue guard]; hundreds of line-drawings within the text, 22 plans (some folding), large folding map at rear of volume 2. Two previous owners signatures on preliminary leaves, dated 1881 and 1972; tanning / fading to spine panels and edges of cloth but a lovely, attractive set in very good condition, the hinges clean and tight inside and out; a pleasing set. George Dennis 1814 - 1898. British explorer of Etruria; his written account and drawings of the ancient places and monuments of the Etruscan civilization combined with his summary of the ancient sources is among the first of the modern era and remains an indispensable reference in Etruscan studies. Originally published in 1848, this second edition is substantially revised and expanded.
