About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1957. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. Fine first issue book with Scribner's A to copyright page. In a Near Fine jacket with minimal rubbing to extremities and small chip to rear panel near crown of spine. A pleasing copy.

Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's imperialist novel Kim, Citizen of the Galaxy considers a future in which humans engage in trade with extra terrestrial communities engaged in slavery. Interplanetary laws seek to limit the trading of human slaves, but when a young boy Thorby is purchased at an auction on the planet Jubbul, readers get insight into the grassroots abolition movements that are potentially more effective at fighting for freedom. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Synopsis

Citizen of the Galaxy is a science fiction novel by American writer Robert A. Heinlein, originally serialized in Astounding Science Fiction (September, October, November, December 1957) and published in hardcover in 1957 as one of the Heinlein juveniles by Scribner's. Influenced by Rudyard Kipling's Kim, the novel, like many of Heinlein's, may also have been influenced by the author's background in and nostalgia for the U.S. Navy.
