New York: Little, Brown and Co., 1971. SIGNED. 1st/1st. VG/G. Stated First Edition. Signed by Pauline Kael with a black Sharpie on the half-title page. The oversized heavy book is tightly bound with grey cloth boards lettered in silver foil. Light sunning to top of boards. Corners bumped. The textblock is clean with no writing, bookplate, or markings and not BCE, ex-library, or remaindered. Faint age toning to pages.Black and white photos throughout. Clean grey endpapers. The dust jacket is price-clipped and Good. Large chip to spine head, light creasing to top front edge, wear to spine tail and corners and a vertical crease to front flap (see photos). Protected in a new Brodart Mylar cover. 440 pages. 8.6 x 11.2" tall.
"The Citizen Kane Book" combines both "Raising Kane" by Pauline Kael and "The Shooting Script" by Hermann J. Mankiewicz and Orson Welles.
"Raising Kane" is comprised of a pair of essays by Pauline Kael published by the New Yorker in 1971 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of that film's creation. The essays were immediately controversial, claiming that although Orson Welles directed the film, he wrote very little of the script. Instead, she maintained, "Citizen Kane" was written primarily by Herman Mankiewicz, who had been credited merely as co-author.
Through extensive research, it is now known that Welles was very much the co-author of "Kane." The argument instigated by Kael about the authorship of "Raising Kane" is simply wrong, and it is hard to see how Kael didn't know it was wrong.
"The Shooting Script" features the first printing of the "Citizen Kane" screenplay and the cutting continuity.
