About This Item

Albany, NY, 1865. Hardcover. Sixty six leaves. Brown leather stamped in gold and blind, all edges gilt. The book belonged to Sarah A. Baker of Earlville, Madison County, New York, a student of the State Normal School of Albany, NY. The Normal School, founded in 1844, became the College for Teachers in 1914, and finally the University at Albany in 1962. The book contains eighty-eight autographs (many with brief dedications, a few with drawings), collected between the end of 1865 and the beginning of 1866. The vast majority of them are of students; two are of teachers at the School; the rest appear to be family members and/or local Madison County friends. Some of the names include: Mary H.
