Three octavo volumes; cloth hardcovers; 840+988+1106pp. Volumes 2 and 3 in the original printed dustwrappers; Volume 1 fine in the original cloth, but lacking the dustwrapper. Volume 2 slightly soiled on text block edges, unclipped jacket is chipped, worn and soiled, just VG; Volume 3 clean and unmarked, Very Good or better in original, unclipped, Near Fine dustwrapper.
The Mississippi author's monumental narrative history of the Civil War, though somewhat lacking in rigor and unfortunately prone to Lost Cause sentimentalism, remains one of the most readable general histories of the conflict. Foote was a major contributor to Ken Burns' 1990 documentary series The Civil War, and this work, while not precisely the source for Burns's film, was highly touted at the time as an essential companion ot the series.

Synopsis
Although he now makes his home in Memphis, Tennessee. Shelby Foote comes from a long line of Mississippians. He was born in Greenville, Mississippi, and attended school there until he entered the University of North Carolina. During World War II he served in the European theater as a captain of field artillery. In the period since the war, he has written five novels: Tournament, Follow Mc Down, Love in a Dry Season, Shiloh and Jordan County. He has been awarded three Guggenheim fellowships.
