  • Used

[Safe passage.] Interesting holograph document granting Henry Boteler permission to take leave from Capt. Graham's company of Artillery, first Regiment, Virginia Artillery, Feb. 22, 1864. One side has a full page handwritten statement, signed by Graham. The verso other side has 5 shorter notices regarding Private Boteler's service, relevant orders and approvals, signed by Graham, Maj. A. L. Long, W. H. Taylor, and others.

A small, faint blue envelope, lined with a cotton gauze, addressed to Mrs. Nannie Boteler, of Shepherdstown, Virginia, has a penciled note added later, "Prized papers of Mrs. Henry Boteler, regarding her Husband's conduct during the war bet. the states."

4 p. Letter from Henry Boteler to his wife, written from Hospital Morgan's Division, Tenn. Feb 14, 1863. A long letter filled with despair and homesickness, " General Buford's command is very much demoralized. Colonel Butler at this time is undergoing a court marshal and chargers preferred I General Bluford. Jack has resigned as have all officers. The company officers resignations will not be received. William Stone is about well. Jim Stone I understand was taken prisoner and had his arm amputated. Jude Burnett and lady I have not seen since I was in Kentucky. The boys are all well."

Lot also includes:
Manuscript invoice for medicines issued to T. W. Allen by Wm. Morrow, C. S.A. Medical Purveyor, July 2,1862.

Ephemeral "Provision Return" form, partially printed and completed by hand (pencil). Hard to make out but the name appears to be "Jonas Todd", "Ky foot"— given that it is found in this collection it might be a Confederate document, but in honesty we have not had the time or skill to track a comparable. The University of Northern Texas has a similar one on its portal to Texas History site, but with significant differences, the chief one being a blank back, where our item has a descriptive list of foodstuffs under the heading "The Rations".

See images. Inquiries welcome.

1714 Joutel Journal Voyage MEXICO La Salle Texas Expedition Indians Mississippi

The BEST account of the La Salle's Texas Expedition!

Henri Joutel was an important 17th-century French explorer who is best remembered for his involvement in the final American expedition of Rene de La Salle. The Texas Expedition of Sla Salle began in 1684 when he and crew left France to establish a colony on the Gulf of Mexico. The voyage is one of the most important European voyages in search of the Mississippi River – a voyage the ended in mutiny and the death of La Salle. The established colony was a failure after being overtaken by Karankawa Indians.

According to Howes,
"Most reliable eye-witness account of La Salle's two-years wanderings in Texas."
