About This Item

UK: Leicester University Press,. Very Good. 1966. First Edition. Soft Cover. 4to 0718510585 128pp, inc illus & maps & plans. Clean and tight. Product Dimensions: 24.4 x 18.2 x 0.6 cm. THE conference on Romano-British Cantonal Capitals, which was held at Leicester University in December 1963, was the outcome of a discussion between Mr David Clarke, then Keeper of Antiquities at the City Museum, and the Editor. It was organized by the University's Department of Adult Education. Between 270 and 280 people attended, and heard a series of short papers describing recent discoveries at Exeter, Chichester, Silchester, Canterbury, Dorchester, Winchester, Leicester, and Wroxeter. Six longer papers taking broader views of the subject were also given, together with an introductory talk by Professor Sir Ian Richmond, and a final summing-up by A. L. F. Rivet. The printed version now appearing will be of value, not only to those who attended, but also to those who were unable to do so. The book contains the six principal papers, together with the introduction and summing-up, and also Lady Fox's paper on Exeter, reproduced in full as a rebuttal to Dr Webster's suggestion in another paper that the civilian town of Exeter was preceded by a fort. A bibliography for all the Romano-British civitas capitals has also been included, and an additional contribution by Dr St Joseph. .
