About This Item

London: Herbert Jenkins Limited A very good copy in the original sage green cloth binding with black titles and a black scene on the front board. Undated, but the list of titles opposite the title page has 12 entries and Ukridge is the final one, suggesting a date circa 1924. The wrap is later, with Summer Lightning and Very Good, Jeeves priced at 7/6 on the front flap suggesting a 1930 date. The binding is bright and clean. There is a very slight warp to the front board and light wear to spine ends and corners. There is spotting to the foredge and top and bottom page edges. Pages are lightly toned but clean. There is a small signature at the top of the front endpaper; bottom page corner creases at pp 99 and 101; and a couple of small ink marks at the side of p 225. The wrap is complete, and has 2/6 on the spine. The spine is darkened and both panels are a little grubby with more grubbiness at the folds. There is general edge nibbling with slight loss at the top edge, particularly at the folds and spine. The bottom edge has a stain on the spine/front panel and some loss at the fold to the front flap. There are a couple of small edge tears. On the verso, the spine is browned and the paper generally spotty.

Synopsis

From the book:This book marks an epoch in my literary career. It is written in blood. It is the outpouring of a soul as deeply seared by Fate's unkindness as the pretty on the dog-leg hole of the second nine was ever seared by my iron. It is the work of a very nearly desperate man, an eighteen-handicap man who has got to look extremely slippy if he doesn't want to find himself in the twenties again. As a writer of light fiction, I have always till now been handicapped by the fact that my disposition was cheerful, my heart intact, and my life unsoured. Handicapped, I say, because the public likes to feel that a writer of farcical stories is piquantly miserable in his private life, and that, if he turns out anything amusing, he does it simply in order to obtain relief from the almost insupportable weight of an existence which he has long since realized to be a wash-out. Well, today I am just like that. Two years ago, I admit, I was a shallow farceur. My work lacked depth. I wrote flippantly simply because I was having a thoroughly good time. Then I took up golf, and now I can smile through the tears and laugh, like Figaro, that I may not weep, and generally hold my head up and feel that I am entitled to respect.

Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery.
