About This Item

London: T. Werner Laurie Ltd., 1936. First Edition. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth, the upper cover bordered along head and foot in green and lettered in black on a green background, the spine lettered in green. 415, (17 advertisements). An attractive copy, the binding remains in good order with only very light mellowing to the spine panel and a small jag at the head, the edges are clean and the text block is fresh. FIRST EDITION. Upton Sinclair is known to have commented that he had been brought up in education by Shakespeare, but the world in which he lived never reflected the beauty in which his learning was steeped. This incompatibility between education and reality, along with his disenchantment with American learning institutions, may have been his inspiration to focus his writing away from utopian thought and dive into the grime of the day. As well, the author seemed not to fit in with his age, as he was an American socialist in a time when the non-capitalist ideal was considered propaganda for the Communist menace. CO-OP A NOVEL OF LIVING: TOGETHER is one of the author’s novels written during residence in California, a stay that brought the author much fame and fortune. It is a narrative of a team, an “army,” of self-help co-operators working together to gain independence.
