Description:
This is a complete, uniform, set of the 25 volume Author's National Edition. However, all the volumes are not first editions from the 1899 publication by Harper and Brothers. Thirteen of volumes are from the 1899 first edition publication. The remaining twelve volumes span the years 1901 - 1909. Condition of each book varies from Good to Very Good+. Pages on all the volumes are clear, without marks and overall without foxing (with only a few exceptions which have some light foxing). Book spines are all in good to excellent condition. We could not find any tears on pages except for a tear on the second page of volume xx (the page with the author's lithographed signature). All have a varied amount of shelf wear at the top and bottom of the spines. Otherwise shelf wear is very slight. Some have slight age toning. All include photogravure front pieces of the author or an illustration related to the book, as well two other illustrations scattered throughout the book. All have Mark Twain's… Read More

Inscribed by Gabriel Marcel on title page to Vol. I. Very good.. Inscribed first edition, two-volume set collecting Gabriel Marcel's (1889-1973) Gifford Lectures presented at the University of Aberdeen between 1949 and 1950 on the nature and purpose of philosophy, faith, and metaphysics in human life. Marcel was an influential French philosopher, playwright, and music critic who, in the tradition of Søren Kierkegaard, was also a renowned Christian existentialist. Marcel focused much of his thought on the displacement of the authentically human in an increasingly industrial and technological world and, like other existentialist thinkers of his time, sought to explain the roots of human alienation. Description:
Although it says in the title that the series is twelve volumes, there is also an index, giving a total of thirteen volumes. The covers are deep red fabric covered boards with leather over the spine. The wear is almost all in that leather area where there has been damage at the top, and/or bottom of some of the spines (some can be seen in the photos). Otherwise, there is little damage. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked, with no yellowing. The top edges of the pages are gilted as are the print and decorations on the spines. Each book has a color frontspiece and other scattered illustrations as well. The original owner inserted various clippings and pictures into the books, which I have chosen to leave for their historical value. A few of them are shown in the final four photos. This set will ship at over 24 pounds and may be shipped in two boxes. It will be shipped with insurance and will require a signature. Escess shipping costs are included in the list price.
