About This Item
Chicago: Rhodes & McClure, 1882. Softcover. Very good. Pamphlet (5 1/4" x 7 1/4"), stitched as issued. 64pp. Light purple paper wrappers with engraved portrait of Ingersoll on front wrapper. Colonel Robert G. Ingersoll (1833 - 1899) was a Civil War officer, a staunch Illinois Republican, and a popular orator, who was best known for his radical views on religion and reform. His friend, Walt Whitman, remarked that "I am drawn to Ingersoll, for he is Leaves of Grass. . . He lives, embodies, the individuality, I preach. " This scarce pamphlet of three Ingersoll speeches reflects the style and pacing of his oratory at the height of his popularity. Edited by J. B. McClure. Light soiling to wrappers with a few contemporary notations and small spot on back wrapper. Overall, very good.
