London: Macmillan and Co, 1884. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo (large). Beige cloth boards with paper spine lable. vii, 211 p.p., [4] p.p ads. With [1] plate of Thomas De Quincey plus tipped-in vignette portrait of Coleridge. Two green leaves taped to front free endpaper and facing title page that were collected from Highgate where the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge is buried. A previous owner inscription on front pastedown reads:"The leaf on the opposite page, and on the opposite title page, were gathered by me from beside one of the windows beneath the chapel of the Cholmeley's School, where Coleridge's remains lie, on Friday, 14 May, 1886.'" Light offsetting to title page from leaf. Boards somewhat soiled and foxed. Havy offsetting to rear board. Spine ends rubbed with text on paper label faded. Spine darkened. Pages trimmed, but not affecting text. Inner gutter on p.p. 112 to 113 starting but still stiff, but otherwise in very good condition. An intriguing and comprehensive early biography of Samuel Taylor Coleridge [1772-1834] life and poetry.
