About This Item
Toronto: McClelland and Stewart Limited, 1975. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 9.5" by 6". Not Stated. A first edition copy of this poetry collection by Earle Birney, complete in two volumes and inscribed by the author to Stephen Vizinczey. The first edition of this two-volume work, in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original slipcase. Signed by the author to the title pages of both volumes. Inscribed to the front free end paper of Volume I, dated 18th July 1977: "For Gloria & Stephen/Stephen & Gloria, blessings always on your home & on you both, loved & generous friends, wai-lan & earle/earle & wai-lan". From the library of Hungarian-Canadian author Stephen Vizinczey, best known for his 'In Praise of Older Women', and 'An Innocent Millionaire'. His writing was praised by the likes of Graham Greene and Anthony Burgess, describing his fiction as social epics which breathe hope in a corrupt world. Earle Alfred Birney (1904-1995) was a Canadian poet and novelist, who twice won the Governor General's Award, Canada's top literary honour, for his poetry. A two-volume set of Birney's collected poems, arranged roughly geographically and chronologically. These groupings comprise poetry from 1920 to 1974, in Canada, the USA, the North and South Pacific, Europe, Mexico, Asia, South America and the Caribbean, and Australia and New Zealand. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original slipcase. Externally, cloth is very smart but faded to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Slipcase is somewhat faded, with a mark either side, but is otherwise smart. Very Good Indeed
