About This Item

Città del Vaticano: Pontificia Academia Scientiarum, 1938. Softcover. Near Fine. A collection of 23 academic printed papers dating from 1938-48 in printed wrappers, housed in a specially made leather chemise with interior silk moire lining and flaps. The chemise is stamped in blind and gold on both sides, with a presentation lettered in gold on the front cover: "To H.E. the Hon. Myron C. Taylor, Personal Representative of the President of the U.S.A. to His Holiness, with the Grateful Compliments of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, April 26, 1948". All 23 papers are near fine, in very good chemise rubbed and lightly sunned at the edges. Myron Taylor was an American industrialist and leading diplomat involved in many of the most important geopolitical events during and after World War II. His special Mission to the Vatican commenced under Roosevelt in 1940, and he played a pivotal role in limiting the Allied bombing of Rome in 1943-44. In December, 1948 he was awarded the Medal for Merit, the highest civilian decoration of the United States. A unique collection of papers (in several languages, including English) published by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in a handsome presentation binding.
