Richmond: Samuel Pleasants, Jun and Henry Pace, 1812. Full Leather. Good binding. Octavo. [2], vi, 454, [2], 72 (index); vi, 167, [1], 322, [2], 209. [1] pp. First edition. Format and bindings are not uniform, both in contemporary sheep with morocco title labels. Boards are abraded; chipping to the spine ends; contents are evenly toned with a few dog-eared leaves and minor closed tears to a few page edges. Generally a solid, not unattractive set. Volume I with the ownership signature of John Wilson (1740-1820) of Pittsylvania County, VA, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and a representative from Virginia at the Constitutional Convention 1788. Printed statements of examination by James Rind and Geo. Wm. Smith mounted to the front pastedown. The second volume with the owner name of Geo. Wilson.
Important collection of Federal period laws ranging from laws governing militias to laws about slavery and free blacks. Herein are also reprinted the Virginia Declaration of Rights (6 May 1776) and the first Virginia Constitution (29 June 1776). Coupled with the second volume which includes the 1812 Supplement, this is fairly uncommon in commerce, particularly with such interesting provenance. Shaw & Shoemaker 5512.
