In 1779, George Rogers Clark captured British Lieutenant Governor Henry Hamilton, nicknamed the 'hairbuyer' and his forces at Vincennes, in the Old Northwest Territory, now Indiana. In the course of escorting Hamilton and the other British prisoners to Virgina, a stopover was made at the Fort on Corn Island, which would evolve into the city of Louisville..
