About This Item
London : Longmans, Green & Co., 1888. First edition. An unusual Haggard, set in his native Norfolk, but one of his best: "A tale of mystery and complications and hidden treasure" (Daily Telegraph) - "combined with the regulation elements of the marriage which is a failure, a bigamy, and a dash of murder ... there is an ex-housemaid and present music-hall singer, suggestively nicknamed 'The Tiger', of a type much better left to the police reports" (Graphic); "reaching a far higher level than any of Mr. Haggard's previous stories" (Liverpool Mercury); "one of the most powerful novels Mr. Haggard has written" (Sheffield Daily Telegraph); "shows that Mr. Rider Haggard has powers of which even he himself is perhaps scarcely conscious" (United Service Gazette). Three volumes. Crown 8vo (20cm). [viii],(248); [viii],(264); [viii],(262),[ii]pp. Original red cloth, lettered in black; spines a little sunned and lightly worn; faint traces of small library labels removed from upper covers; some minor bruising and marking; small labels expertly removed from front endpapers, leaving only faint traces; endpapers very slightly cracked in vol. iii; a few minor internal marks and spots; a touch shaken, but a good set in the original cloth, showing very little evidence of library use. Neat blind stamp of Warren's Library, Winchester, in each volume.
