TARDIEU, Ambroise. LE COLONNE DE LA GRANDE ARMEE D'AUSTERLITZ, OU DE LA VICTOIRE, MONUMENT TRIOMPHAL ERIGE EN BRONZE, SU LA PLACE VENDOME DE PARIS. Paris: Author, 1822. 4to. Old mottled paper sides, vellum spine. 75 pages w 38 engraved plates. First edition. A "descriptio, accompagnee de 36 planches representant le vue generale, les medailles, piedestaux, bas-reliefs et statue dont se compose ce monument." T famous column was erected between 1806 and 1812 under the direction of the architect Jacques Gondouoin. The column's stone core 132 feet high, is entwi in a spiral made from the bronze of 1,200 cannon captured at the Battle of Austerlitz (1805) and decorated with military scenes similar to Trajan's colu in Rome. They are fully illustrated in the Tardieu book. The colossal statu placed at the top of the column was Napoleon as Caesar, also illustrated here.
