About This Item
New York: Dodd, Mead & Co , 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 232p octavo, illustrated. A fine copy in red cloth. A book important enough for Wright Howes to take note of it. Stanton contradicts John Wesley Powell's explanation for what occurred on the famous trip down the Colorado River in 1869 when 3 men disappeared. The book is scarce last appearing at auction in 1995 and before that 1948. Tipped into this copy is a 21line t.l.s. from Julius Stone to author Clyde Eddy who wrote books on the Colorado and was in agreement with Stanton and he says so in his own hand on page 93 at the conclusion of a chapter.."I have been twice through Grand Canyon and agree with this conclusion by Mr Stanton Clyde Eddy". Stone in his letter states that he is he last man living who knew Jack Sumner very well (Sumner being the chief boatman for the trip down the Colorado) and who gave his account directly to Stanton.
