About This Item

London: R. H. Porter, 1885-1897 (1898). First edition. Half Morocco. Very Good. 4to. 26 by 18 cm. 421 color plates, which are either hand-colored lithographs or chromolithographs. Photogravure portrait frontis. The greatest number of plates were drawn by Archibald Thornburn. The survey includes many birds that are infrequent visitors to Britain, making it very complete. With generally short texts on each species, this is primarily a visual source work. Publisher's half morocco. Pebbled cloth on boards. Condition: pencilled numbers on the plate that relate to an organizing system of a prior owner. Light scuffs and wear to the binding. Occasional light foxing.
