Columbia College, N. Y. Negative by E. L. Walker. Photographic and Fine Art Journal Print. An albumen print, mounted on a sheet measuring 27.5 cm x 35 cm, a trimmed oval image measuring 17 cm x 22 cm. This photograph is from a negative used to make volume prints which served as tipped-in illustrations in the June 1857 issue of The Photographic and Fine Art Journal, Vol. 10, page 160, H. H. Snelling, editor. In the description of this illustration on page 185, it is stated that this building was first occupied in 1760 and underwent repairs in 1820, which did not materially alter its original appearance. At the time this photograph was taken in 1857, the building was slated to be torn down. A pencil annotation on the back indicates the location of this building as being between Church and Chapel Streets. Charles Lockwood in Manhattan Moves Uptown, an Illustrated History, says "The Park Place district was fortunate in having Columbia College as a neighbor; it occupied a two-block square campus, bounded by Barclay Street, Church Street, Murray Street, and College Place (now called West Broadway). Park Place stopped at the Church Street boundary of the campus and resumed its course a block to the west at College Place under its original name, Robinson Street." Page 42. There is an ink annotation signed by W. B. Welling and dated 1974 about the history of the photograph and its appearance in print. There is also a pencil annotation "346". There is slight soiling to the mount, but the image is fine.

Description:
[San Francisco]: [Probably Taber Photo], 1880. Ephemera. Near fine. An imperial plate (8-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches) image of the El Capitan, one of the best-known rock formations in the Yosemite Valley. Watkins made at least five mammoth-plate images from this vantage point over a period of at least 20 years. Watkins took this image between 1878 and 1881. It may have been printed by Isaiah Taber, after Taber took over Watkins's bankrupt photo studio. However, it does not have the Taber imprint but the mount matches another Yosemite image with Taber's logo in the negative. This view is very similar to one of Watkins's mammoth-plate images (Naef and Hult-Lewis, Carleton Watkins: The Complete Mammoth Photographs, no. 136) and was almost certainly taken at the same time. It is easily distinguishable from images taken at another time because this image and the corresponding mammoth-plate view have a white reflection of the mountain in the water in the foreground. In addition to the albumen print offered…

Paris: A. Maurice, 1878. Fine.

Period albumen portrait mounted on thick cardboard and embossed in the photographer's credit
Tiny spots, remarkable original condition
Famous and last portrait of the poet by Otto in preparation for his candidacy for the French Academy
Paul Verlaine commissioned the photographer to take a series of portraits when he considered applying for the Académie Française. Several tests are then carried out.
For these photographs, the poet poses with the famous scarf of the house Charvet, which had been given to him by Robert de Montesquiou.
Three years before his death, the poet appears the Socratic face, the hunchbacked forehead, his gaze sunk under the eyebrow arch, sporting the chamaré scarf of which he was so proud.
This portrait is one of the most famous of the poet, it is presented here in a remarkable state of preservation.

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are…
