Published in 1973, Bell's COMING OF POST-INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY in many ways foresaw the world in which we live today: one moving away from manufacturing and agriculture to one based on information, service, and knowledge work. And although he didn't originate the idea of the post-industrial society (that would be Alain Touraine), Bell did popularize it - and its influence continues to reverberate. Homans and Bell were longtime colleagues at Harvard, and Bell penned Homan's obituary for THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY, writing: "George Caspar Homans was uniquely a humanist and a sociologist, among the last, one might say, of a generation."
