San Francisco: Printed for the Author by Upton Bros., 1881. Hardcover. Very Good. George H. Baker. Brown, blind-ruled cloth boards with gilt lettering on the front cover. Light wear to spine ends. Marbled edges of text block. Sixteen plate illustrations. Includes Index, Index of Illustrations, and Errata. 64 pages. 6 x 4 inches. Written and published by Keep to provide a convenient and well-illustrated manual of the more common shells found on the coast of California. The first chapter treats the structure of Mollusks, the second gives directions for finding, studying, and preserving specimens; the remainder of the volume is taken up with descriptions of the several species. Most shells in this volume were collected at Monterey Bay. Josiah Keep (1849-1911) was a conchologist and Professor at Mills College. The illustrations were made by George H. Baker of San Francisco [presumed to be George Holbrook Baker (1827-1906), artist, art teacher and lithographer.
