About This Item

London: Humphrey Milford/Oxford University Press, 1943. Quarter Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Shelley was, arguably, the finest and most philosophically influential poet and playwright of the English Romantic period. Among his enduring works are "Prometheus Unbound," "The Cenci," "Ozmandyias," Ode To The West Wind," and "Queen Mab," all included in this volume, edited by Thomas Hutchinson. First edition thus, later printing. About 5 x 7 inches, 912 pages in green, quarter-leather binding over green, marbled cloth-covered boards with leather corner protectors. All leather areas bordered in gilt. Five raised bands with gilt borders on spine. A ribbon bookmark is bound in. Frontispiece is 1819 painting of Shelley. Text also includes a preface by Hutchinson, two prefaces and a postscript by Mary Shelley, the poet's wife and author of "Frankenstein." Also included are notes on the text and its punctuation, a list of the principal editions of Shelley's works and an index of first lines. Boards show light bumping at corners and spine ends with moderate wear on raised bands on spine and other edges. The gilded word "Poems" on the spine is missing the "m." Gilded top edge and other text edges slightly soiled, o/w a brief inscription to previous owner on front endpage is only significant flaw or damage. Not ex-library, not remaindered. Overall appearance is of moderately worn, elderly book from the library of a gentleman of similar desription.
