About This Item

London: William Heinemann, 1951. 1st. hardback. Very good, 1st edition (1st reprint same year), no d/j, red clothbound boards, gilt spine titling somewhat faded; text blocks generally good (I & III a little loose); pages unmarked (apart from light pencil). Provenance: owned by P. M. B. Savage, renowned Headmaster of Summer Fields, Oxford until 1975.. 8vo: crown (200 x 140 / 8"" x 5_""). Maugham's brilliant stories move the reader from England, France and Spain to the silver sands of the South Pacific. It includes the famous story 'Rain', the tragedy of a narrow-minded and overzealous missionary and a prostitute, and 'The Three Fat Women of Antibes,' an extravagantly sardonic tale of abstention and greed, as well as a host of other brilliant tales. 65 stories in total.
