Octavo, bound in full tree calf by Riviere & Son with gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt ruling to the front and rear panel, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, supplied tissue-guarded frontispiece. In very good condition. A nice binding. Widely considered the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages, Geoffrey Chaucer is best known for The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer also achieved fame in his lifetime as a philosopher and astronomer, composing the scientific A Treatise on the Astrolabe for his 10-year-old son Lewis. Among Chaucer's many other works are The Book of the Duchess, The House of Fame, The Legend of Good Women, and Troilus and Criseyde.
