Second Viking Press Printing. First published in 1964 by Thames & Hudson Ltd., London. 225 b/w illustrations throughout. Bright green cloth with no titles is clean and has tape residue marks from removed mylar cover, otherwise unmarked, tight and solid, slightly rubbed edges, remainder mark on lower edge of text block. Internals very clean, with pencil underlining on a few pages, no other marks. A superbly illustrated volume which presents the history of England in a form short enough to be grasped, and seen, as a whole. The author emphasizes the achievements and constructive features of English history, above all, the evolution of democratic institutions and the creation of a social order strengthened by the extension of liberty, tolerance, and freedom of speech. His central theme is the successful reconciliation of order and liberty in English society and life.
